Día de Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a celebration rich in tradition and meaning. When Neiman Marcus approached Bella’s Floral & Decor to create an altar and decorations for an exclusive fashion show, we knew we had to deliver a design that balanced tradition with the sophistication Neiman Marcus is known for. What resulted was a stunning blend of vibrant colors, intricate designs, and heartfelt symbolism.
When Neiman Marcus approached us, they envisioned a decor setup that paid homage to the traditions of Día de Muertos while meeting their sophisticated standards. Our goal was to strike the perfect balance between cultural authenticity and modern elegance.
The centerpiece of our design was a meticulously crafted Día de Muertos altar, adorned with vibrant marigolds, candles, and traditional offerings. Each element on the altar held deep cultural significance: the marigolds, or cempasúchil, are known as the "flower of the dead," believed to guide the spirits with their vibrant color and scent. The candles represented light to guide loved ones back to the world of the living, and the offerings, or ofrendas, honored those being remembered.
To enhance the ambiance further, we incorporated:
A stunning marigold arch: Symbolizing the pathway that spirits traverse to return to their loved ones. Its vibrant orange hues radiated warmth and created a welcoming gateway for the spirits.
Elegantly detailed Catrinas: Iconic representations of La Calavera Catrina, a figure that reminds us to celebrate life and honor the dead with joy and reverence.
Custom floral arrangements with marigolds and monarch butterflies: Monarch butterflies hold special meaning in Día de Muertos traditions, as they are believed to carry the spirits of departed loved ones back to visit the living. Their delicate beauty, combined with the marigolds, reinforced the theme of connection between worlds.
Papel Picado: Traditional cut-out banners representing the fragility of life and the connection between the earthly and spiritual realms, swaying gently as a symbol of the unseen.
This thoughtful combination of traditional and modern elements beautifully captured the essence of Día de Muertos, creating a visually striking and culturally meaningful backdrop for the exclusive fashion show.
